The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has dismissed claims circulating on online platforms alleging that one of its cadets, Stephen Kubama Gani, went missing without appropriate action by the institution, describing the reports as misleading.
In a statement issued by the Academy, the NDA explained that Cadet Gani, a member of the 76 Regular Course, was admitted into the institution and reported for training on August 26, 2024. According to the Academy, his training progressed without incident until April 28, 2025, when he absented himself from the Academy without official permission.
The NDA said that in line with established military procedures and regulations governing cadet administration, the cadet’s parents were formally notified three days after his absence was observed. Seven days after the incident, he was struck off the Academy’s strength following due administrative processes.
The statement further disclosed that subsequent feedback from the cadet’s parents indicated that his whereabouts could not be ascertained, prompting the Academy to initiate renewed investigative procedures, which are still ongoing.
Reiterating its commitment to transparency and due process, the NDA stressed that the training and administration of cadets are strictly guided by military laws, regulations and long-established traditions as outlined in the Academy’s code of conduct.
The Academy urged the public to disregard claims suggesting that it had failed to act on the matter, noting that it takes the safety and wellbeing of all cadets seriously. It added that adequate mechanisms, including regular stop checks and physical inspections, are in place to ensure that every cadet is properly accounted for.
Signed by the Academy Public Relations Officer, Major Reuben Kovangiya, the statement reaffirmed the NDA’s status as a leading military and academic institution committed to producing disciplined, dedicated and loyal officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
