- Ask for restraint and understanding among Northern political and business leaders
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions and growing discord among prominent political and business leaders in Northern Nigeria. This discord is casting a shadow on the region’s economic and political stability.
In an official statement bearing the signature of its Convener, Professor Ango Abdullahi, NEF highlights the ongoing conflicts between Aliko Dangote and Abdussamad Isiyaku Rabiu regarding cement prices, as well as the clash of interests between Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State and Defense Minister Bello Mohammed Matawalle. These conflicts are exacerbating the Northern region’s already substantial challenges in terms of security and the economy.
NEF urgently calls upon the leaders embroiled in these disputes to exhibit restraint in the greater interest of the region. Furthermore, NEF appeals to all leaders and stakeholders in the North to facilitate a reconciliation meeting among the concerned parties. Notably, it is essential for the two leaders from Zamfara, Lawal and Matawalle, to demonstrate maturity and a spirit of unity to combat the pressing insecurity in the state.
NEF underscores that the difficulties faced by Zamfara demand a united effort, and only through collaboration can these challenges be surmounted. Engaging in unnecessary conflicts and grandstanding diverts attention from the genuine issues at hand and impedes progress in the pursuit of collective and coordinated action.
The Forum emphasizes that the people of the state already grapple with a multitude of issues, including insecurity, poverty, and an ailing economy. As leaders, it is their duty to alleviate these burdens and secure a better future for their citizens. However, engaging in conflicts among themselves squanders precious time and resources that could be better employed to address these pressing matters.
NEF also reminds that Alhaji Dangote and Abdussamad are distinguished business leaders and respected elders of the North, who should be setting an example for the entire region. By fostering greater understanding and avoiding unnecessary conflicts, leaders can establish a stable environment conducive to peace-building, progress, and development, ultimately contributing to the overall stability and prosperity of the Northern region.
The Forum, acting as concerned elders of the North and recognizing that these misunderstandings among key segments of Northern leadership do not align with the best traditions of Northern culture and values, has made the resolution to engage all parties involved, individually and collectively, to bring about a final resolution to these disputes.
Meanwhile, NEF implores the conflicting parties to reconsider their ongoing conflicts and refocus on their shared objective of securing and improving the lives of Northern people. They should refrain from engaging in media disputes and encourage their proxies to do the same.
NEF stresses the utmost importance of prioritizing unity and collaboration over personal conflicts. The challenges confronting the North require a united front, and only through collective action can they be overcome. It’s time to put differences aside and work towards a stable and prosperous future for the people of Zamfara State and the entire Northern region.
The Northern Elders Forum commits to closely monitor the unfolding developments, with the hope that the leaders will reclaim their statesmanship by demonstrating greater restraint for the region’s benefit.
