NEMA begins damage assessment of fire outbreak at Singa market in Kano

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has initiated a coordinated emergency response following a devastating fire outbreak at the popular Singa Market in Kano State on Saturday, February 14, 2026.

The fire, which was reported at about 4:30 p.m., engulfed sections of the busy market, with thick smoke and intense flames threatening lives, property and adjoining structures.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, activated the agency’s Kano Operations Office, which promptly deployed a response team to the scene to support containment efforts.

Agencies involved in the coordinated response include the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Fire Service, the Kano State Fire Service, the Nigerian Air Force, the Aspira Nigeria Limited Fire Unit, the Dangote Group Fire Unit, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Officials said sustained firefighting operations have significantly reduced the intensity of the blaze, with the situation gradually coming under control. Emergency responders remain on ground to ensure full containment and prevent further spread of the fire.
