NEMA boosts rescue and relief efforts in Niger State flood disaster

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), working with other emergency response bodies, has intensified search, rescue, and relief efforts in flood-affected communities of Mokwa, Niger State.

On Saturday, May 31st, 2025, the NEMA rapid response and recovery team conducted a symbolic handover of relief materials to affected persons, entrusting further distribution to the Local Government Area (LGA), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the community leader, Sarkin Hausawa.

The flooding has so far claimed 151 lives, displaced 3,018 people, and damaged 264 houses across 503 households. NEMA is closely monitoring the full recovery of those admitted to health centres, with all patients now discharged.

Floodwaters have also damaged two township roads and bridges, severely disrupting transportation and local economic activities. To curb the outbreak of water-borne diseases, NEMA has deployed mobile water purification equipment and introduced hygiene measures in the affected communities.

Acting on President Bola Tinubu’s directive, NEMA has mobilized resources and support to help the town recover swiftly. Meanwhile, the agency has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), a multi-stakeholder platform for real-time flood monitoring, data tracking, and coordinated response efforts across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The NEOC’s activation marks a strategic and proactive measure, beginning with the Mokwa response, to effectively manage the 2025 flood emergency.
