NEMA call for flood preparedness amidst heavy rainfall in Lagos

In the wake of persistent heavy rainfall in Lagos State, Nigerian authorities are urgently appealing to citizens to recognize the potential consequences for the upcoming 2024 rainy season. With the continuous disruption of normal lives and preliminary assessments revealing displacement in affected communities, there is a growing imperative to embrace disaster risk reduction strategies and adhere to safety measures to prevent flood disasters.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is actively collaborating with relevant State Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to address observations and findings from the recent incident. The state has demonstrated a committed stance towards implementing comprehensive efforts aimed at enhancing safety measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall.

Alhaji Mustapha Habib Ahmed, the Director General of NEMA, has issued crucial appeals to Nigerians to take proactive measures in ensuring drainage systems remain clear and functional. He emphasizes the importance of desilting drainages and encourages Community Development Associations to play an active role in coordinating neighborhood activities aimed at fostering safer environments.

Furthermore, local government authorities are urged to enforce environmental laws rigorously, particularly against corporate organizations blocking drainages and individuals engaging in drainage blockage and refuse dumping. Such enforcement measures are essential in safeguarding societal safety and reducing the risk of flood disasters.

The Director General has also commended Lagos State Government for its decisive actions taken post the 2023 rainy season, particularly in the removal of drainage-obstructing structures. He highlights Lagos State as an exemplary model and encourages other state governments to emulate its proactive approach in taking bold steps towards ensuring a safer environment for their citizens.

As Nigeria braces itself for the forthcoming rainy season, authorities stress the paramount importance of collective efforts in disaster preparedness and risk reduction. By prioritizing the well-being of citizens and implementing robust measures across all levels of society, Nigeria aims to mitigate the potential impact of heavy rainfall and safeguard its population from the adverse effects of flood disasters.
