NHRC orders probe into Uyo office misconduct

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct by its personnel at the commission’s Akwa Ibom State office in Uyo following the circulation of a video on social media.

The commission said it was treating the allegations seriously, emphasising that its personnel must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect for the rights and dignity of complainants, regardless of provocation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, disclosed that the Executive Secretary of the commission, Chief Tony Ojukwu, had directed an immediate investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the statement, appropriate administrative measures would be taken in line with existing rules if any misconduct was established.

The commission stressed that its commitment to protecting human rights must begin with how it treats individuals who approach its offices for assistance, noting that every complainant deserves dignity, respect and professional service.

“Our professional training is that at no point in time should a complainant be charged against even if there is provocation,” the statement said.

The NHRC reiterated its commitment to accessible, free, timely and accountable service delivery, urging members of the public who encounter difficulties accessing its offices to report such cases through its toll-free line, 6472.

The investigation is expected to determine the facts surrounding the incident and establish whether any disciplinary action is warranted against the personnel involved.
