NHRC unveils strategic plan for 2024-2027, prioritizing collaborations

In a significant development, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has underscored the pivotal role of collaborations and partnerships in realizing its envisioned strategic objectives for the upcoming period spanning from 2024 to 2027. Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, made this assertion during a high-profile stakeholders meeting convened to deliberate on the proposed NHRC Strategic Plan 2024-2027 at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.

Dr. Ojukwu emphasized the imperative of forging partnerships with a diverse array of stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, institutions, and the general public. Highlighting the strategic significance of collaboration, he specifically cited the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Public Complaints Commission as key partners. Notably, these entities, with their extensive presence in all local government areas across the country, will serve as pivotal collation points for addressing grievances related to human rights violations.

The NHRC Executive Secretary articulated that the envisaged four-year Strategic Plan is designed to provide a comprehensive framework guiding the Commission in fulfilling its mandate. This includes upholding Nigeria’s commitment to international human rights principles, as enshrined in foundational documents such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and various regional and international conventions.

Chief Ojukwu outlined that the key objectives of the Strategic Plan, scheduled for implementation between 2024 and 2027, are aligned with the Thematic Areas of Focus of the Commission. Additionally, they draw inspiration from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the National Development Plan 2021-2025 of the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the Policy Thrust and 8 Point Agenda of the current administration.

The NHRC leader stressed a commitment to addressing previously overlooked areas while concurrently addressing emerging trends in the human rights landscape. “We aim to enhance our efforts in areas where attention was lacking in 2019 and respond proactively to emerging trends in the realm of Human Rights that demand our immediate attention,” Chief Ojukwu asserted.

This strategic initiative signifies the NHRC’s proactive approach in advancing human rights protections through synergistic collaborations and a well-defined roadmap for the years ahead.
