In a noteworthy achievement, Nigeria has attained a remarkable score of 70 percent in the recently concluded International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Universal Safety Audit Program Continuous Monitoring Approach (USOAP-CMA). This achievement marks a significant improvement, with the nation surpassing its previous audit score of 67.1 percent recorded in 2016.
The comprehensive audit, conducted between August 30 and September 11, 2023, was a meticulous assessment of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority’s capacity to deliver safety oversight. It scrutinized the effectiveness and consistency with which the State had implemented the critical elements (CEs) of a safety oversight system.
The ICAO audit program, USOAP-CMA, serves as a fundamental tool for monitoring and evaluating a State’s ability to enforce ICAO’s safety-related Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), in addition to associated procedures and guidance materials. It also offers ICAO a means to continuously observe the fulfillment of safety oversight responsibilities by participating States.
This substantial achievement of scoring 70 percent underscores Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to enhancing aviation safety and compliance with international aviation standards. The notable three percent increase from the previous audit in 2016 reflects the nation’s dedication to improving its aviation infrastructure and safety protocols.
Nigeria’s successful performance in the ICAO Universal Safety Audit Program Continuous Monitoring Approach (USOAP-CMA) serves as a testament to the nation’s progress in ensuring the highest level of safety in its civil aviation operations. This accomplishment is set to contribute to Nigeria’s standing in the global aviation community as a responsible and safety-conscious aviation authority.
