Nigeria assures US of sanctity of press freedom

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has underscored Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to the fundamental principles of press freedom, emphasizing its pivotal role in fostering a vibrant democracy and transparency in governance. This affirmation was made during a courtesy visit by the US Charge d’Affaires to Nigeria, Mr. David Greene, on Tuesday.

Expressing support for press freedom, Minister Idris urged the government of the United States to endorse initiatives aimed at instituting best practices in the media space, with a specific emphasis on implementing fact-checking mechanisms. This, he argued, would contribute to mitigating the proliferation of misinformation, fake news, and mal-information.

According to Rabiu Ibrahim, the Special Assistant to the Honorable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Minister Idris further reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to democracy. He emphasized the importance of the United States, as a key ally, deepening its support for the Tinubu administration. The focus of this support is directed towards the reengineering of the Nigerian economy based on the principles outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda. This agenda prioritizes key areas such as food security, poverty eradication, economic growth, job creation, access to capital, social inclusion, the rule of law, and the fight against corruption.

Minister Idris highlighted President Tinubu’s proactive approach to attracting foreign investment, citing his participation in various economic fora and engagements with business leaders and stakeholders. Notably, President Tinubu’s recent engagements include the Summit on New Global Financing Pact in Paris, the G20 Summit in India, and the Saudi-Africa Summit in Riyadh. Currently, President Tinubu is in Berlin, Germany, attending the G20 Compact with Africa Conference, demonstrating his commitment to retooling the Nigerian economy through strategic partnerships.

In response, Mr. Greene assured Minister Idris that the United States fully supports Nigeria’s democracy and is committed to fostering the growth of its media landscape through consistent training initiatives over the years. He acknowledged Nigeria’s critical role as a partner in regional security and economic development.
