Nigeria moves to ease tensions with Ghana, reaffirms bilateral ties

Nigeria has taken diplomatic steps to ease rising tensions with Ghana, as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria-Ghana relations during a two-day working visit to Accra.

The visit follows mounting agitation by some Ghanaian groups calling for the expulsion of Nigerians from the country. In response, Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized Nigeria’s desire for continued peaceful coexistence and deeper collaboration—not only at the government level, but also among citizens of both nations.

According to a statement from her media aide, Dr. Magnus Eze, the minister’s engagements are aimed at safeguarding the lives, property, and businesses of Nigerians living in Ghana. She is holding meetings with key stakeholders, including Ghana’s President, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, traditional rulers, and members of the Nigerian community in Ghana.

Shortly after arriving at Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday evening, Odumegwu-Ojukwu briefly met with the Ghanaian Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, ahead of his departure for London.

Her diplomatic engagements continued on Wednesday, with a series of high-level discussions with Ghanaian officials and leaders of the Nigerian diaspora. She is expected to return to Abuja on Thursday.

The visit underscores Nigeria’s proactive approach to resolving bilateral concerns through dialogue and diplomacy, while ensuring the safety and dignity of its citizens abroad.
