Nigeria rallies West African support for UN security council bid

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, recently concluded a diplomatic tour across West Africa, seeking support for Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader foreign policy goals, focusing on advancing regional integration, peace, and international cooperation.

During his visit to Togo, Tuggar discussed potential investment in the phosphate industry, emphasizing the opportunity for collaboration with Nigeria’s fertilizer sector. Togo’s mineral resources, combined with Nigeria’s fertilizer production capabilities, were highlighted as a promising partnership.

In Guinea-Bissau, Tuggar underscored Nigeria’s commitment to stability, noting its peacekeeping efforts and troop deployment under President Tinubu’s administration to promote peace and harmony in the region.

In The Gambia, Nigeria’s long-standing contributions, especially through the Technical Aid Corps program, were acknowledged as essential to The Gambia’s development, particularly in education. Cote D’Ivoire was the final stop, where discussions focused on economic collaboration through the Abidjan-Lagos trade corridor and agricultural partnerships in cashew production.

Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s qualifications to represent Africa on the Security Council, given its history of prioritizing regional and continental interests. He noted that with 68% of Security Council actions affecting Africa, Nigeria’s role on the council would amplify African perspectives.

Support was also garnered for Nigeria’s candidate, Femi Elias, for the International Court of Justice. This diplomatic tour marks the beginning of Nigeria’s efforts to rally regional support for its Security Council bid, reaffirming its commitment to regional stability and influence in global governance.
