Nigeria reaffirms One-China policy, seeks stronger economic ties with China

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to the One-China Principle, describing its position on Taiwan as consistent, settled and non-negotiable, as the country moves to deepen economic cooperation with China.

The Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) said Nigeria’s recognition of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing China has remained a cornerstone of bilateral relations since both countries established diplomatic ties in 1971.

The agency noted that Nigeria reiterated the position during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in 2024, where both countries issued a joint statement reaffirming Nigeria’s recognition of the People’s Republic of China as the only legal government representing the whole of China.

According to the NCSP, Nigeria also expressed support for China’s pursuit of national reunification during the high-level engagement.

The reaffirmation comes amid renewed global attention on the Taiwan issue following recent diplomatic discussions triggered by a visit to Beijing by a United States delegation reportedly led by President Donald Trump alongside top American business executives.

Director-General of the NCSP, Joseph Tegbe, said Nigeria intends to leverage its longstanding relationship with China to unlock broader economic opportunities in manufacturing, industrialisation, technology transfer and export-oriented production.

Tegbe noted that China has played a significant role in supporting Nigeria’s infrastructure development through investments in rail transportation, ports, energy projects, telecommunications and industrial expansion.

He added that the partnership should evolve into deeper collaboration in the digital economy, solid minerals development, agro-processing and consumer markets to create a more balanced and productive economic relationship between both nations.

The NCSP reaffirmed its commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and China across trade, infrastructure, investment, technology transfer and capacity building, with the aim of delivering tangible economic benefits to Nigerians.
