In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, Air Commodore John Ijudigal, a serving officer of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), successfully intervened to foil a robbery and kidnapping attempt by suspected criminals known as ‘one-chance’ operators in Abuja.
In a statement, Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet said the incident took place on February 14, 2024, along Accra Road in Wuse Zone 5, resulting in the arrest of three suspects and the safe rescue of two kidnapped victims.
The unfolding of events occurred around 7:28 PM when Air Commodore Ijudigal, while commuting home in his staff car after duty, encountered a distressing scene. He witnessed an Abuja-painted taxi, identified as a Mazda 323 with registration number BWR 232 XB, reversing at high speed with terrified passengers onboard, screaming for assistance. In pursuit of the taxi was a black Toyota Land Cruiser. Responding instinctively, Air Commodore Ijudigal promptly engaged in the pursuit, using his official vehicle to block the escape route of the criminals.
The situation escalated when the driver of the ‘one-chance’ vehicle, in a state of panic, collided with Air Commodore Ijudigal’s official vehicle, causing significant damage to both cars. The impact forced the ‘one-chance’ vehicle off the road and into a nearby garden. Undeterred, Air Commodore Ijudigal immediately pursued one of the suspects who attempted to flee into a nearby bush. With the assistance of bystanders at the scene, including onlookers gathered due to the accident, the driver of the ‘one-chance’ vehicle along with two other suspects, one male and one female, were apprehended, and two female victims were safely rescued.
Following the apprehension, Air Commodore Ijudigal coordinated with the nearest police post and ensured the transfer of the three criminals to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Mr. Benneth Igweh, at his office. The FCT Commissioner of Police commended Air Commodore Ijudigal for his courageous intervention, emphasizing that his actions not only thwarted a robbery and kidnapping attempt but also contributed significantly to the apprehension of criminals posing a threat to the safety of law-abiding citizens in the FCT.
In recognition of his valor and selfless service, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, commended Air Commodore Ijudigal for his exemplary conduct. Air Commodore Ijudigal, a former NAF Deputy Director of Sports and currently serving as the Deputy Director of Logistics at the Defence Headquarters, has earned praise from the Nigerian Air Force for his outstanding act of bravery and dedication to public service.
