The Nigerian Army (NA) has addressed the circulation of a misleading audio-visual recording on various online platforms, falsely suggesting that the NA is recruiting Islamic fundamentalists and jihadists. The video inaccurately depicts an officer encouraging Muslim young men to join the military to protect and propagate Islam.
In a statement Director Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said in response, the NA emphasizes that the claims in the footage are entirely false and intended to incite anxiety, fear, and distrust among its personnel and the public, particularly among Christian and non-Muslim communities. The NA asserts that its values and standards do not align with the narrative presented in the video, which aims to erode public confidence in the Army’s integrity and provoke a religious crisis in the country.
The NA upholds professionalism and impartiality, operating without ethnic or religious bias. All operational and administrative actions are conducted according to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not influenced by religious sentiments.
The Army urges the public to dismiss the misleading report, attributing it to a misunderstanding of the NA’s Standing Operating Procedures (SOP). The NA also reiterates that any deviation from its SOP results in appropriate disciplinary action, regardless of the individual’s religious affiliation.
Citizens are called upon to reject divisive tactics and remain united. The NA highlights that Nigeria’s strength lies in its unity in diversity, a principle the Army is committed to protecting while fulfilling its constitutional duties. The NA remains dedicated to serving and safeguarding all Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic backgrounds, and calls for collective efforts to maintain national peace and unity.
