In a joint effort to bolster peace and stability across Nigeria, the Nigerian Army (NA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have reaffirmed their commitment to a collaborative partnership focused on providing security, humanitarian assistance, and upholding international humanitarian law (IHL).
According to Director Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, this resolution was solidified during a meeting held today, January 31, 2024, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja. Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), welcomed the ICRC delegation led by Mr. Yann Bonzon.
Mr. Bonzon, in his briefing to the CoAS, emphasized the ICRC’s dedication to delivering humanitarian aid in conflict zones globally, citing the ongoing efforts in North-East Nigeria. He acknowledged the positive impact of the cooperative relationship with the NA, enabling the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) to fulfill its responsibilities in various regions of the country. He urged the continuation of this collaboration.

Expressing gratitude, CoAS Lagbaja commended the ICRC for its steadfast commitment to providing humanitarian aid, noting the positive effects on the living conditions of conflict victims in affected areas.
Addressing the capacity-building initiatives of the NA in understanding and implementing International Humanitarian Laws during operations, CoAS Lagbaja highlighted the codification of protocols within the military. These protocols now serve as teaching guides in NA institutions for Non-Commissioned Officers, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers, and junior officers, ensuring their adherence to international best practices as guided by the ICRC.
CoAS Lagbaja applauded the ICRC’s contributions in areas such as training and medical assistance. He pledged the NA’s dedication to fortifying its partnership with the ICRC and other relevant organizations. This commitment aims to alleviate the suffering of conflict victims and further enhance the nation’s security and stability.
