In a continued effort to curb illegal oil activities in the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Navy, under Operation DELTA SANITY, successfully discovered and deactivated two illegal refining sites in Bayelsa State on Sunday, August 18, 2024. The operation, conducted by personnel from the Naval Outpost KOLUAMA, targeted the Akassa general area, a known hotspot for illicit oil refining.
The Navy team uncovered sophisticated setups at the sites, including dugout pits and refining ovens used to process stolen crude oil. Additionally, a wooden boat laden with an unspecified amount of crude oil was found at the location, further highlighting the scale of the illegal operations.
The deactivation of these sites is part of the Nigerian Navy’s broader strategy to combat oil theft, which has long plagued the Niger Delta region. Illegal refining not only results in significant economic losses for the country but also causes extensive environmental damage, including pollution of water bodies and farmlands.
Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Flag Officer Commanding the Central Naval Command, commended the personnel involved in the operation for their vigilance and swift action. He emphasized that the Navy remains resolute in its mission to disrupt and dismantle all illegal refining operations in the region. “The Nigerian Navy will continue to intensify its operations to ensure that criminal elements involved in oil theft are brought to justice, and the integrity of our national resources is preserved,” Ogalla stated.

The ongoing crackdown under Operation DELTA SANITY has seen increased patrols, intelligence gathering, and collaboration with other security agencies to target and dismantle illegal refining sites. The Navy’s efforts have yielded significant successes in recent months, with multiple sites being discovered and deactivated across the Niger Delta.
Local communities in the region have expressed relief at the Navy’s efforts to address the illegal refining activities, which have often resulted in environmental disasters and health hazards for residents. The Navy has also been working closely with these communities to gather intelligence and ensure that operations are conducted with minimal disruption to civilian life.
The Nigerian Navy’s continued commitment to eradicating illegal refining and oil theft is crucial for the protection of the nation’s oil resources and the restoration of environmental stability in the Niger Delta. As Operation DELTA SANITY progresses, further actions are expected to strengthen security and economic stability in the region.
