In a significant operation on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base BONNY intercepted and impounded a large wooden boat laden with an unspecified amount of stolen crude oil within the Andoni general area. This successful operation is part of the broader initiative under Operation DELTA SANITY aimed at combating oil theft and illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region.
Simultaneously, Nigerian Navy Ship PATHFINDER executed a major crackdown on illegal oil refining in the Karkrama general area. The team discovered and deactivated nine illicit refining sites, which included nine ovens, nine receivers, and several dugout pits used for the illegal refining process. The dismantling of these sites represents a critical step in curbing the environmental damage and economic loss caused by these illegal activities.
Rear Admiral Adesola Oshodi, the Flag Officer Commanding of the Eastern Naval Command, commended the dedication and efficiency of the naval personnel involved in the operations. “These successful interceptions and deactivations underscore our unwavering commitment to eradicating oil theft and illegal refining. Our operations are designed to protect our national assets and preserve the integrity of our environment,” he stated.
The Nigerian Navy continues to intensify its surveillance and interdiction efforts across the Niger Delta, leveraging intelligence and collaboration with other security agencies. The focus remains on disrupting the supply chain of stolen crude oil and dismantling the infrastructure that supports illegal refining.
