Nigerian Navy troops uncover and dismantle multiple illegal oil refining sites in Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta

On Friday, 23 August 2024, in a coordinated effort under Operation DELTA SANITY, the Nigerian Navy made significant strides in curbing illegal oil refining activities across the Niger Delta region.

In Rivers State, personnel from the Forward Operating Base BONNY discovered and dismantled an illegal refining site in the Alakiri general area. The site contained a storage tank, two cooking ovens, a wooden boat, and several dug-out pits filled with large quantities of stolen crude oil.

Meanwhile, in Bayelsa State, Naval Outpost KOLUAMA II successfully deactivated another illegal refining site in Otougbene, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area (LGA). The site was found to be laden with an unspecified quantity of stolen crude oil.

Further south, in Delta State, the Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA uncovered and deactivated two illegal refining sites in Christian Village, Warri South-West LGA. The operation resulted in the discovery of three refining ovens, two storage tanks, five dug-out pits containing large quantities of stolen crude oil, and numerous sacks filled with illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

These operations highlight the Navy’s ongoing commitment to combating illegal oil activities in the Niger Delta, as part of a broader strategy to restore peace and security in the region.
