The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) have unveiled a landmark initiative to integrate Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database with the country’s digital postcode system, in a move aimed at transforming public service delivery, strengthening digital governance and accelerating economic inclusion.

The initiative will enable Nigerians to verify their addresses and retrieve official digital postcodes through the NINAuth platform, effectively linking verified identities with authenticated location information on a unified digital infrastructure.

Officials said the integration is expected to improve the delivery of government services, enhance emergency response, deepen financial inclusion, strengthen logistics and e-commerce operations, and provide more reliable data for national planning.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, described the partnership as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation, noting that it lays the foundation for an integrated Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

She explained that the newly enacted NIMC Act 2026 has expanded the Commission’s mandate, making it the custodian of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure for identity and the Root Certification Authority for the National Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

According to her, the legislation provides the legal and technological framework for secure digital identity, electronic authentication, digital signatures and trusted online transactions across both government and the private sector.

She stressed that combining identity with verified location is essential for building a truly digital economy. “The National Identification Number tells us who a person is, while the National Postcode System tells us where that person can be reached. Bringing both together creates the trusted digital foundation required for efficient governance and inclusive economic development,” she said.

Coker-Odusote disclosed that technical teams from both agencies had completed the integration of postcode retrieval into the NINAuth platform, enabling citizens to seamlessly verify both their identity and address.

She added that the collaboration aligns with the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda by promoting interoperability among public institutions and delivering faster, safer and more efficient services nationwide.

Describing NIPOST as a strategic partner, she said the agency’s nationwide addressing infrastructure would help extend digital services to communities across the country while supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through improved governance and expanded economic opportunities.

Also speaking, Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Omotola Odeyemi, said the partnership represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s critical digital infrastructure.

She noted that modern economies depend on two key capabilities—knowing who people are and where they are—and said integrating digital identity with the national postcode system would strengthen governance, logistics, emergency response, commerce and access to public services.

Odeyemi said NIPOST is evolving from a conventional postal operator into a modern digital infrastructure institution, with the National Digital Postcode Initiative serving as one of its flagship reforms.

She added that the agency’s nationwide presence and statutory mandate position it to provide a reliable national addressing framework capable of supporting Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

The NIPOST chief assured Nigerians that the integrated platform would operate under the highest standards of data protection, cybersecurity and institutional accountability.

The partnership marks another step in the Federal Government’s drive to build a robust Digital Public Infrastructure, with secure identity verification and authenticated location data increasingly recognised as essential pillars of effective governance, digital innovation and sustainable economic development.
