NIMC to begin ward-level NIN registration February 16

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced plans to commence a nationwide ward-level enrollment exercise for the National Identification Number (NIN) on Monday, February 16, 2026.

The commission said the initiative is in line with a presidential directive mandating the expansion of NIN registration to grassroots communities, with the aim of capturing more Nigerians and legal residents in the National Identity Database.

In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC said the ward-level enrollment is designed to ensure comprehensive registration of citizens and legal residents, including both children and adults. The exercise will be conducted free of charge.

According to the commission, the rollout supports the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises inclusive governance, national development and broader access to essential identity services.

NIMC described the ward-level initiative as a strategic effort to decentralise identity services and improve accessibility, particularly for residents in rural and underserved communities. By moving enrollment centres closer to local populations, the commission said it aims to ease travel constraints and boost participation.

As part of its preparations, NIMC said it has commenced consultations with key stakeholders at the national, state and local government levels. Ongoing sensitisation campaigns are also being carried out to educate the public on the importance and benefits of obtaining a NIN.

The commission disclosed that it is working closely with state governments, local government authorities, traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations and faith-based organisations to ensure seamless implementation of the exercise nationwide.

NIMC urged Nigerians and legal residents who have yet to enroll to take advantage of the opportunity, encouraging families to register their children, parents and wards during the exercise.

The ward enrollment schedule, detailing the rotational deployment of licensed front-end partners and NIMC officials, is available on the commission’s website.

For inquiries, assistance or complaints, members of the public can contact NIMC through its toll-free line, 08000616462.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to expanding identity coverage across the country and strengthening the national database as a foundation for effective planning, service delivery and economic inclusion.
