The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Anosike, has underscored the determination of the agency’s new leadership to fortify its operations and elevate service delivery standards.
Addressing participants on Monday, the 8th of January, 2024, during the inauguration of a 3-day NiMet management retreat in Abuja, Professor Anosike outlined the primary goal of the retreat as the reinforcement of collaborative relationships among agency staff. He emphasized the need to break down internal barriers and silos that have hindered productivity over the years.
“The overarching objective of the 2024 NiMet management retreat is to strengthen collaborative relationships among staff of the agency. It’s time to dismantle the imaginary walls and silos built internally over the years which has been stifling productivity. The retreat will give us all a good understanding of the work NiMet does. The science of meteorology should be treated and handled with all seriousness because of its importance and impact on lives, properties, and on the economy,” Professor Anosike stated.
He further urged participants to actively engage during the retreat, making meaningful contributions that will aid NiMet in achieving its mandate efficiently. Despite the prevailing economic challenges, Professor Anosike highlighted opportunities in the external environment for NiMet and called for a reduction in operational wastages, prioritization of spending, and improvement in internally generated revenue.
“Despite prevailing economic challenges, there are opportunities in the external environment for NiMet. We should aim to reduce wastages in our operations, prioritize spending, and improve our internally generated revenue,” Professor Anosike remarked.
He reminded participants that while NiMet’s services are directly linked to weather and climate in Nigeria, the forces driving environmental changes indicate that NiMet’s activities have far-reaching impacts on all aspects of the Nigerian economy. The call for a collective effort to elevate NiMet’s operational efficiency remains at the forefront of the agency’s agenda under the new leadership.
