NiMet to unveil 2025 seasonal climate prediction on February 4

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is set to release its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. This year’s theme is “The Role of Early Warnings Towards a Climate-Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development.”

NiMet annually forecasts climatic variables such as rainfall and temperature in Nigeria, fulfilling its mandate to provide critical weather, climate, and water-related information to the government and the public.

Prof. Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, emphasized the SCP’s significance in providing essential weather and climate insights that impact various sectors, including agriculture, aviation, disaster risk management, health, oil and gas, telecommunications, tourism, transport, power, and water resources management.

“The SCP document outlines the socioeconomic implications of expected rainfall and temperature patterns across several economic sectors,” said Prof. Anosike.

The SCP will offer details on the 2025 rainy season’s onset and cessation dates, the length of the cropping season, total rainfall projections for all 774 local government areas, temperature forecasts from January to May, and vigilance forecasts for malaria and meningitis.

This national document will be unveiled at a public presentation attended by representatives from the public and private sectors, development partners, NGOs, the diplomatic community, and farmers’ associations. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, will lead the presentation, which will include a summary for policymakers and translations in three major Nigerian languages, as well as the “State of the Climate in Nigeria” report.
