The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to collaborating with universities to improve weather forecasting and provide vital climate-related insights that will benefit Nigerian farmers and agrarian communities.
Professor Anosike made this statement during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NiMet and Taraba State University on Thursday, February 13, 2025. He noted that the agency’s growing network of university partners plays a crucial role in enhancing the availability of weather and climate data, which, in turn, improves the accuracy of NiMet’s forecasts.
“NiMet’s network of university partners is expanding, which significantly enriches the volume and quality of data available to us. In addition to the data generated from NiMet-owned weather stations, contributions from universities provide an even broader dataset. This ensures that our weather forecasts are more precise and reliable, ultimately benefiting local farmers and other key stakeholders who rely on accurate climate information for their activities,” Anosike stated.
He further emphasized that NiMet remains committed to monitoring the progress of all agreements signed with universities and other higher institutions to ensure that both parties fulfill their obligations.
Enhancing Academic Research and Agricultural Practices
In response, the Vice Chancellor of Taraba State University, Professor Sunday Paul Bako, expressed appreciation for the collaboration, stating that the partnership aligns with the university’s commitment to addressing climate-related challenges affecting agriculture and environmental sustainability.
“Our goal in partnering with NiMet is to meet the needs of not just our immediate university community but also the larger agrarian population. We have departments such as Geography, Agriculture, and Ecotourism at Taraba State University that will greatly benefit from this collaboration.
“Our Faculty of Agriculture, which runs extension programs, will use data from the NiMet weather station to raise awareness on sustainable farming and climate-smart agricultural practices,” Bako said.
He further noted that the university’s researchers and students will have access to real-time meteorological data, enhancing studies on climate change, weather patterns, and environmental management.
Strengthening Climate Resilience in Nigeria
The MoU, which is set for an initial period of four years and is renewable, aims to promote activities related to meteorology, climatology, and climate change across Nigeria. It is designed to build the technical capacity of both NiMet and its academic partners in delivering accurate weather-based products and services that support key sectors such as agriculture, water resources management, disaster risk reduction, and environmental conservation.
By leveraging academic expertise and expanding NiMet’s data collection capabilities, the partnership is expected to foster resilience against climate-related risks, particularly in rural farming communities that depend on reliable weather information for food production and economic stability.
NiMet continues to strengthen its engagement with higher institutions across the country, reinforcing its role as Nigeria’s leading authority in weather and climate services.
