The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a stark warning as air temperatures surged to scorching levels, reaching a blistering 41°C over the Northern region and 39°C over the Southern areas of the country. The agency further projected that these high temperatures are likely to persist in the coming days, exacerbating health risks for residents across Nigeria.
NiMet emphasized the potential dangers associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat, cautioning against dehydration which could lead to a range of health issues including fainting, chickenpox disease, measles, heat rash, bodily weakness, slight fever, and dry lips. Moreover, the agency highlighted the increased susceptibility to heat-related illnesses, respiratory problems, and heightened vulnerability to chronic conditions under such conditions.
In light of these concerning developments, NiMet issued several advisories aimed at safeguarding public health:
- Adequate Fluid Intake: Residents are urged to maintain a sufficient intake of fluids to prevent dehydration and associated health complications.
- Seek Shade and Wear Breathable Clothing: Individuals are advised to seek shade wherever possible, utilize fans, and opt for light, breathable clothing to minimize exposure to high temperatures.
- Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity During Peak Heat Hours: To mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses, NiMet advises avoiding strenuous physical activities, particularly during the hottest hours of the day, between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm.
As temperatures continue to soar, NiMet urges the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health and well-being amidst the prevailing heatwave conditions across Nigeria.
