The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Gas Marketing Ltd, a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd, has taken a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s domestic gas supply network. In partnership with its joint venture partner, NIPCO Gas Ltd, the company has signed a Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd to supply natural gas to Ssonic’s proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos State.
According to Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd Olufemi O. Soneye, under the terms of the agreement, which was officially executed on March 6, 2025, the NGML-NIPCO Unincorporated Joint Venture (UJV) will supply 80 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of natural gas to the Ssonic Petroleum LNG plant for a period of 20 years. This long-term deal is expected to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s industrialization efforts by ensuring a steady supply of natural gas for processing and export.
The agreement is part of NNPC Ltd’s broader strategy to boost domestic gas utilization, support industrial and economic growth, and promote the transition to cleaner energy sources. As Nigeria continues to implement its “Decade of Gas” initiative, this partnership underscores the commitment of NNPC Ltd to harnessing the country’s vast gas resources to drive sustainable development.
Natural gas is increasingly being recognized as a cleaner and more cost-effective alternative to traditional fossil fuels. By supplying gas to the Ssonic Petroleum LNG plant, NNPC Ltd aims to enhance Nigeria’s role in the global gas market while also reducing carbon emissions in line with international climate change commitments. The deal aligns with the company’s vision to position gas as a key driver of economic diversification, providing industries with a reliable and environmentally friendly energy source.
Speaking on the significance of the agreement, NNPC Ltd’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi O. Soneye, emphasized that the collaboration is a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s gas value chain and maximize the country’s natural gas potential. “This partnership with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd represents another milestone in our efforts to deepen domestic gas supply, promote industrial growth, and create a sustainable energy future for Nigeria,” Soneye stated.
With increasing global demand for gas and Nigeria’s ambition to become a major player in the global energy transition, the NNPC-Ssonic agreement marks a critical step toward ensuring energy security, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability.
