NNPC Ltd/Total Energies JV achieves zero gas flare, demonstrating commitment to climate goals

In a significant stride towards fulfilling Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Accord, the NNPC Ltd/TotalEnergies Joint Venture has successfully ceased all routine gas flaring across its assets.

In a statement Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Ltd. Abuja Olufemi O. Soneye said this accomplishment, announced during an inspection tour of OML 100 in the South-eastern Niger Delta, underscores the commitment of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to combatting climate change.

He said the achievement marks the culmination of the OML Flare Reduction Project, initiated in December 2023, which aimed to eliminate routine gas flaring across all assets. Previously, the NNPC Ltd/TotalEnergies Joint Venture had already achieved zero routine flaring in OML 99 (2006), OML 102 (2014), and OML 58 (2016), leaving OML 100 as the final lease with ongoing flaring.

Eliminating the last routine flare volume of approximately 12MMscf/d has resulted in a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, estimated at about 341KtCO₂e/yr. This milestone aligns with Nigeria’s broader goal of achieving a 20% unconditional and 47% conditional reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as outlined in its Nationally Determined Contribution.

The success of this initiative reflects NNPC Ltd’s strategic approach to sustainability, emphasizing the ‘Reduce’ aspect of its 5R Strategy—Reduce, Replace, Renew, Re-plant, Repurpose. It signifies a concerted effort to minimize the corporation’s carbon footprint while advancing towards a more sustainable energy future.

Under the leadership of NNPC Ltd, efforts are underway across all assets within its Upstream Directorate to ensure that zero routine flaring is achieved by 2030 or earlier. This commitment underscores Nigeria’s dedication to meeting its international climate obligations and fostering environmentally responsible energy practices.
