The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the deaths of seventeen police officers who were killed following a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja DCP Anthony Okon Placid said the incident occurred in the early hours of 8 May, 2026, when armed terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the training facility—identified as the Nigerian Army Special Forces School—from multiple directions at about 01:15hrs.
The affected police officers were said to be undergoing specialised operational and counter-terrorism training at the institution when the attack occurred. Several soldiers also reportedly lost their lives while repelling the assailants.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the deceased officers as gallant personnel who demonstrated exceptional patriotism and dedication to national service through advanced tactical training aimed at strengthening internal security operations.
He extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers, assuring that their sacrifices would be honoured and never forgotten.
In a show of solidarity, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training facility on behalf of the Inspector-General. He commiserated with the Commandant of the school, A.C. Enuagu, as well as surviving trainees and personnel.
He commended the resilience of surviving officers and urged them to remain focused in completing their training in honour of their fallen colleagues.
The Police Force reiterated its commitment, in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, to ensure the perpetrators of the attack are tracked down and brought to justice.
The Force further paid tribute to the deceased officers, describing them as heroes whose service and sacrifice will remain a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s security history.
