NPF unveils green initiative to enhance security operations and foster socio-economic and environmental impact

In a significant move towards bolstering operational efficiency and capacity in the fight against crime, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially launched the Nigeria Police Green Initiative.

In an official Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said this initiative, established through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding, is designed to leverage innovative green solutions for law enforcement, with a broader aim to contribute to the socio-economic development of the nation and address environmental sustainability and climate change concerns.

At the core of the initiative is the “Nigeria Police Emission Reduction Programme,” aligning with national and global efforts to combat climate change. This program encourages Police Officers to adopt emission reduction practices in both professional and personal capacities. This includes a transition to renewable energy sources, particularly solar lighting, for applications across Police Stations, Colleges, Barracks, Outposts, and surrounding communities. The overarching goal is to facilitate a shift towards low-carbon, climate-resilient development.

The Nigeria Police Green Initiative extends its focus to eco-friendly transportation methods within the force. This entails transitioning to electric and gas conversion vehicles, effectively reducing the consumption of premium motor spirits (PMS) and curbing air pollution. Such measures not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute to promoting a healthier lifestyle among police personnel and the community at large.

In a bid to minimize its environmental footprint, the initiative incorporates sustainable waste and water management practices, including the implementation of solar boreholes and waste-to-energy programs. These efforts aim to reduce operational costs, generate employment opportunities, and foster a cleaner environment.

The Nigeria Police Force is also taking proactive steps beyond its immediate jurisdiction, illuminating communities with solar power to mitigate security vulnerabilities and address herder-farmer conflicts. Outreach programs are being conducted to educate citizens on the importance of preserving natural resources, reducing pollution, and embracing sustainable practices, thereby managing conflicts arising from natural resource disputes.

Recognizing the importance of collaboration, the NPF has identified key stakeholders, including the United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, to support the initiation and sustainability of the green initiative.

Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun emphasized the timeliness of the Nigeria Police Green Initiative, especially in light of the upcoming Twenty-eighth session of the Conference of Parties (COP28) on Climate Change scheduled in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023. He affirms that Nigeria will stand out among nations at COP28, showcasing how government institutions can lead by example in addressing climate change issues. The Nigeria Police Green Initiative stands as a testament to the force’s commitment to adding significant value to the Federal Government while fulfilling its core law enforcement responsibilities.
