NUJ FCT launches IIJ scholarships for 20 journalists

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has fulfilled a key campaign promise by introducing the 2024/2025 Scholarship Program to support journalists pursuing a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (PGDJ) at the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) in Abuja.

In a statement issued Tuesday by Council Secretary Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the Council outlined eligibility criteria, including financial membership standing for the past two years, possession of valid NUJ ID cards for 2023 and 2024, and active participation in union activities such as Congress meetings.

Beneficiaries will contribute 50% of the tuition fees, while the Council will cover the remaining cost, ensuring affordability for selected candidates.

This initiative, led by NUJ FCT Chairman Comrade Grace Ike, reflects the Council’s commitment to advancing professional development. “When we promised to invest in the professional growth of our members, we meant every word,” Ike said. “This scholarship is a testament to our mission to make the NUJ FCT Council a hub for excellence and career advancement.”

Twenty journalists from various chapels and media organizations will benefit from the program, which underscores the Council’s focus on capacity building and competitiveness in the media industry.

Comrade Ike reiterated her administration’s resolve to enhance the union’s impact, saying, “Our mission is not only to serve but to elevate the profession and provide the tools for our members to thrive.”

Chapel Chairmen have been tasked with nominating eligible candidates for the program, with the successful applicants set to commence their studies in the 2024/2025 academic session.

The Council urged members to embrace this opportunity as a step towards personal and professional growth, marking a significant milestone in the NUJ FCT Council’s empowerment initiatives.
