The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has expressed shock and deep sorrow over the death of one of its members, Mr. Sunday Olatuyi, who was fatally knocked down by a vehicle at Lugbe Bus Stop, Abuja.
Mr. Olatuyi reportedly lost his life on Saturday night, December 20, 2025, after being hit by a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABUJA RBC 128 AM while returning home from work. He was said to be in the company of a friend at the time of the incident, which witnesses attributed to reckless driving.
The deceased, aged 40, hailed from Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He is survived by his wife, a seven-month-old daughter, Eniola, and his aged mother.
Until his untimely death, Olatuyi was a Senior Cameraman with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN Television). He previously worked with Ben TV and was widely regarded as a dedicated professional and committed union member.
Describing his passing as a painful loss, the NUJ FCT Council said Olatuyi’s dedication to journalism and active participation in union activities would be sorely missed, noting that his death has created a vacuum within the council and the media community at large.
The council condemned the circumstances surrounding the incident and expressed grave concern over the increasing cases of reckless driving and disregard for human lives on roads within the FCT.
In a statement, the NUJ FCT Council called for an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, urging the Nigeria Police Force to promptly prosecute the driver involved in accordance with the law. It stressed that justice must be served to deter similar acts of negligence.
The council extended its condolences to the bereaved family, the management and staff of ADBN Television, the Correspondents’ Chapel, the Society of Practicing Cameramen, as well as friends and colleagues of the deceased.
It assured the family of its solidarity and support and pledged to closely follow the case until justice is achieved.
Mr. Olatuyi was remembered as a consummate professional whose gentle disposition and commitment to duty earned him respect across the media industry.
