In a resolute stride towards bolstering transparency and reinforcing internal integrity, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede has issued a directive mandating all staff members of the Commission to promptly declare their assets, in strict accordance with established civil service regulations and protocols. This directive was conveyed during an address to senior EFCC personnel at the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
Emphasizing the indispensable role of ethical conduct in the battle against corruption, Olukoyede underscored the imperative of staff members, spanning from level 17 downwards, complying with this asset declaration mandate. He himself led by example, having declared his assets, setting the standard for accountability. He also acknowledged that some staff members might have undergone asset declaration processes in the past but affirmed the need for a comprehensive reevaluation. The declaration of assets will be accompanied by rigorous scrutiny and investigation to ensure full transparency and accountability. Olukoyede asserted, “We must maintain an unwavering commitment to ethical conduct as anti-corruption crusaders, and it is paramount that our hands remain unsullied.”
He further entreated Commission personnel to dedicate paramount attention to the essence of their mission, which is combatting economic and financial crimes. He articulated that these efforts should be channeled towards fostering national economic growth, fostering an environment conducive to increased investment, and strengthening the country’s economic foundations. “We must contribute to the betterment of our nation. Investors should have confidence in our economy, and our duty is to facilitate accountable and transparent governance. Through these actions, we can chart a new course to restore our nation’s reputation,” he stated.
Olukoyede also urged EFCC staff to maintain a professional demeanor, rigor in their operations, integrity in their actions, and an apolitical stance. He implored, “Let us uphold high ethical standards and rectify any internal issues. While some may not be in favor of my decisions, I am committed to equitable treatment, regardless of religious, ethnic, or regional background.”
He assured the staff of the Commission of improved welfare packages, advanced training opportunities, and equal chances for career progression. Simultaneously, he cautioned those who engage in activities that compromise their professional responsibilities to cease such behavior, as grave consequences await any deviations from the path of ethical conduct.
The EFCC Chairman pledged that adherence to the rule of law would be an unwavering tenet and guiding principle in their work. “The EFCC’s existence is rooted in the law, and our operations will consistently align with the dictates of the law. This is an internationally recognized standard, and we shall steadfastly uphold it as our norm,” he affirmed.
