The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with key stakeholders, to combat illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region in an operation, codenamed “DELTA SANITY,” executed by personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) JUBILEE, NNS PATHFINDER, and Headquarters Operation Delta Safe, in partnership with Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited discovered a large-scale illegal refining site in the Ataba community, located within the Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State on Monday, August 12, 2024.
The site was equipped with multiple storage tanks, refining ovens, and extensive dug-out pits, all used for the illicit processing of crude oil.
Upon discovery, the illegal facilities were immediately destroyed to prevent further environmental degradation and to disrupt the criminal activities that have plagued the region. The destruction included the burning of the refining ovens, demolition of the storage tanks, and filling of the dug-out pits.
Rear Admiral Olusegun Adebayo, the Commander of NNS JUBILEE, highlighted the importance of this operation in the broader context of safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources and ensuring the stability of the oil-rich region. He emphasized that illegal refining not only causes significant economic losses but also poses severe environmental and health risks to local communities.
In his statement, Rear Admiral Adebayo reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to continuing these operations until illegal refining and other related criminal activities are eradicated from the Niger Delta. He called on local communities to cooperate with security forces by providing timely information that could lead to the identification and dismantling of other illegal sites.
The Nigerian Navy’s collaboration with Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited and other partners underlines the importance of a multi-agency approach in addressing the complex challenges of illegal refining.
