Operation DELTA SANITY: Nigerian Navy deactivate illegal refining sites in Bayelsa

In a decisive operation on Saturday, Naval Outpost KOLUAMA II successfully discovered and deactivated two illegal refining sites in Otugbene, Southern Ijaw. The operation, codenamed “DELTA SANITY,” was a significant step in the ongoing fight against oil theft and illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region.

During the operation, naval personnel uncovered a sophisticated setup, including one refining oven, several dug-out pits, and hoses used for siphoning and transporting stolen crude oil. Additionally, a storage unit containing large quantities of stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) was found on site. The illegal refining sites were swiftly dismantled, preventing further environmental damage and economic loss.

Commander of the Naval Outpost KOLUAMA II, Captain Adebayo Johnson, emphasized the importance of such operations in maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s oil resources. “The success of Operation DELTA SANITY underscores our commitment to eradicating illegal refining activities and protecting our national assets. We will continue to intensify our efforts to ensure the safety and security of our maritime environment,” Captain Johnson stated.

The discovery of these illegal sites highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in combating oil theft and environmental degradation. The Nigerian Navy has been actively engaged in numerous operations to dismantle illegal refineries, which not only cause significant economic losses but also result in severe environmental pollution.

Local communities in Southern Ijaw have expressed their support for the navy’s efforts, recognizing the detrimental impact of illegal refining on their health and livelihoods. Community leader Chief Ebikabowei Perekeme remarked, “We are grateful for the navy’s intervention. The illegal refineries have polluted our land and water, affecting our fishing and farming activities. We hope these actions will bring lasting change to our community.”

Operation DELTA SANITY is part of a broader strategy by the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies to curb illegal activities in the oil sector. The operation’s success serves as a deterrent to those involved in oil theft and reinforces the government’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources.
