Operation DELTA SANITY: Nigerian Navy seizes illegally refined PMS in Delta

In a significant crackdown on illegal refining activities, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA, as part of Operation DELTA SANITY, made a major discovery on Thursday, August 1, 2024. During a routine patrol in the Bernet Island area of the Zion Community, Delta State, Navy personnel intercepted a wooden boat carrying a large quantity of illegally refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Further investigation led the patrol team to an illegal storage facility nearby, where they uncovered nine GeePee storage tanks filled with more of the illicitly refined fuel. The tanks, often used for large-scale storage, were seized by the Navy as evidence of the ongoing illegal refining operations in the region.

The discovery and seizure of the wooden boat and storage tanks are part of the Navy’s broader efforts to combat the illegal refining and distribution of petroleum products, which have been a persistent issue in the Niger Delta region. These activities not only lead to significant economic losses for the country but also pose severe environmental and health risks to local communities.

NNS DELTA personnel are currently intensifying efforts to track down the owners and operators of the illegal storage facility. The Nigerian Navy has emphasized its commitment to eradicating these illegal activities and bringing the perpetrators to justice. The operation is part of a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime security and safeguarding Nigeria’s oil and gas resources.

The Navy’s actions are expected to serve as a deterrent to others involved in illegal refining and to demonstrate the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward such activities. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to illegal refining or other maritime crimes to the authorities.

The success of this operation underscores the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in the fight against illegal oil bunkering and refining in the region. The Nigerian Navy, along with other security agencies, remains committed to ensuring the security of the nation’s maritime domain and the protection of its natural resources.
