Operation DELTA SANITY: Security forces seize illegally refined AGO, equipment in Delta

In a decisive move against illegal oil activities, the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos, operating under the ongoing Operation DELTA SANITY, intercepted and impounded a wooden boat laden with drums of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in the waterways around the Abiteye and Olero communities of Delta State on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

The security team, acting on intelligence reports, successfully apprehended the vessel during a routine patrol designed to curb the rampant illegal refining and transportation of petroleum products in the Niger Delta region. Alongside the drums of AGO, the boat was also found to contain several outboard engines and a pumping machine, essential tools used in the illegal refining and distribution operations.

This latest seizure underscores the ongoing commitment of the Nigerian security forces to eradicate illegal oil refining, which has long been a scourge in the region, contributing to environmental degradation and economic losses for the country. The FOB Escravos, which is strategically positioned in one of Nigeria’s most oil-rich regions, has been at the forefront of operations aimed at dismantling networks involved in these illicit activities.

A senior officer from the FOB Escravos, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described the operation as a significant success, emphasizing the importance of sustained surveillance and swift action in the fight against oil theft. He noted that the impounded items, including the wooden boat, outboard engines, and the pumping machine, are crucial evidence in ongoing investigations aimed at bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“The operation was a well-coordinated effort, reflecting our commitment to securing Nigeria’s oil assets and protecting the environment from the devastating effects of illegal refining. The confiscated items are currently being held as part of our ongoing investigation, and we are determined to trace and apprehend all those involved in this criminal enterprise,” the officer stated.

Operation DELTA SANITY is part of a broader strategy by the Nigerian military and other security agencies to intensify the crackdown on illegal oil activities across the Niger Delta. The operation involves coordinated efforts between the Navy, Army, and other paramilitary units to disrupt and dismantle the complex networks that facilitate the illegal refining, transportation, and sale of stolen petroleum products.

Community leaders in the affected areas have expressed their support for the operation, acknowledging the detrimental impact that illegal refining has had on local ecosystems and the health of residents. The toxic byproducts of these illegal activities have severely polluted the waterways, affecting fishing activities, which are a primary source of livelihood for many in the region.

In the wake of this operation, security forces have vowed to maintain a heightened presence in the region to prevent further illegal activities. They are also calling on local communities to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities and providing information that could lead to more arrests and seizures.

As investigations continue, the authorities are determined to send a clear message to those involved in illegal oil activities: there will be no safe haven for criminals in the Niger Delta, and the full force of the law will be brought to bear on anyone found complicit in these destructive practices.
