Oronsaye Report: FG allays the fear of job losses

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has addressed concerns regarding potential job losses amidst the implementation of the Oronsaye Report, aimed at rationalizing government agencies and parastatals.

During the fourth edition of the Ministerial Press Briefing Series in Abuja, the Minister, as conveyed by his Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, emphasized the government’s objective to enhance cost-effectiveness and service efficiency. He assured that the intention is not to initiate workforce downsizing or exacerbate unemployment.

Idris underscored that the long-awaited implementation of the Oronsaye Report signifies President Tinubu’s steadfast commitment to fiscal prudence and responsible governance. This initiative entails a comprehensive review of governmental commissions, agencies, and parastatals to uphold essential services without compromising citizens’ needs.

The Minister articulated that the approval for executing the Oronsaye Report, after meticulous scrutiny, aims to eliminate functional redundancies, streamline administrative processes, and optimize resource allocation. This strategic approach is geared towards bolstering governmental efficiency while upholding service quality for the Nigerian populace.

Furthermore, Idris highlighted tangible economic advancements attributable to the President’s proactive reforms across various sectors. Citing data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), he noted a notable GDP growth in the fourth quarter of 2023, alongside a substantial surge in capital importation and a reduction in petrol imports post-subsidy withdrawal. Moreover, the Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index reaching unprecedented heights signifies enhanced investor confidence, fuelled by the administration’s pragmatic policies.

The Minister disclosed President Tinubu’s directives for the formulation of a Social Security Unemployment Programme catering to unemployed graduates and the establishment of a Social Consumer Credit Scheme to bolster purchasing power amidst economic adjustments. Additionally, the President approved the resumption of direct payments to 15 million households under the National Social Investment Programme.

Minister Idris attributed the nation’s economic progress not to chance but to President Tinubu’s visionary leadership and reform agenda, fostering a conducive environment for sustainable growth and prosperity.
