The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called for the immediate suspension of the planned Local Government elections in Osun State, citing credible intelligence reports indicating a high risk of violence and security threats. The advisory comes as intelligence gathered from multiple sources suggests that various political elements and interest groups are mobilizing to instigate unrest, disrupt public peace, and undermine the democratic process.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, the NPF stressed that the current security landscape in Osun State is highly volatile. The police warned that proceeding with the elections under these conditions could lead to widespread disorder, endangering lives, property, and the overall stability of the state.
“The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, is fully prepared to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order. However, to avert unnecessary confrontation and safeguard the democratic process, it is in the best interest of all stakeholders that the elections be stood down,” the statement read.
Beyond security concerns, the police also highlighted significant legal uncertainties surrounding the elections. According to the NPF, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice recently provided legal clarification regarding judicial pronouncements on Local Government administration in Osun State.
A recent Court of Appeal ruling delivered on February 10, 2025, is said to have nullified a previous Federal High Court decision, raising serious questions about the legal foundation of the planned elections. The police emphasized that any election conducted under such circumstances could lead to further legal battles, potentially invalidating the outcome and deepening political tensions in the state.
The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Nigeria’s democratic processes are upheld in accordance with the law. The Force urged all political stakeholders, parties, and residents of Osun State to exercise restraint and prioritize public safety during this period.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to upholding law and order. We call on all parties involved to consider the broader implications of these elections and act in the best interest of the state and the nation,” the statement concluded.
The police further assured the public that security agencies would continue monitoring the situation and take all necessary measures to prevent any threats to peace and stability in Osun State.
