The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a police officer captured in a viral social media video allegedly issuing threats and engaging in conduct described as unbecoming of an officer of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Command identified the officer as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Newton Isokpehi, who is currently serving within the state command. Police authorities said the officer was immediately identified and taken into custody following a review of the video circulating online.
According to the Command, internal disciplinary proceedings have commenced against the officer in line with the ethics and disciplinary regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
Police authorities also disclosed that the officer has undergone a drug test as part of efforts to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure transparency in the investigation process.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the officer’s conduct, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined institution that does not condone misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any form of unprofessional behaviour capable of eroding public trust.
The Command assured residents of the state that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public, adding that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with police regulations and extant laws.
It further reminded officers and personnel of the Command to remain professional, emotionally disciplined, and respectful in the discharge of their duties, particularly amid increasing public scrutiny of security agencies.
The police also commended residents, civil society groups, and social media users for providing credible information that supports accountability and improved service delivery, while encouraging members of the public to continue reporting activities capable of threatening public peace and safety.
