Police dismiss viral video alleging terror attack in Abuja

The FCT Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video alleging an ongoing terrorist attack in Abuja, assuring residents that there is no security breach within the Federal Capital Territory.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer for FCT Command, Josephine Adeh said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said the video, which claims that terrorists are advancing on the city amid heavy gunfire, was deliberately fabricated to incite panic and misinform the public.

According to the Command, preliminary investigations revealed that the gunshot sounds in the footage were edited from an unrelated source and superimposed on visuals of an unidentified location showing buildings under construction, with no verifiable connection to Abuja.

The police chief has consequently ordered a comprehensive forensic analysis of the video’s digital trail to identify and apprehend those responsible for its circulation, with a view to prosecuting offenders under applicable laws.

The Command warned content creators against disseminating false information capable of causing fear, panic, and public disorder, reiterating its commitment to maintaining public safety and confidence through accurate and timely communication.

Residents were urged to disregard the video and avoid sharing unverified content, noting that such materials are often designed to create unnecessary alarm.
