Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on a military formation in Benisheikh, Borno State, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced.
According to a statement by Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, the incident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday when insurgents attempted to breach the Brigade Headquarters of the 29 Task Force Brigade.
The troops, under the leadership of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, mounted a swift and coordinated response, engaging the attackers with superior firepower and forcing them to retreat in disarray.
The Defence Headquarters said the failed assault reflects increasing desperation among terrorist elements following sustained military pressure in the North-East theatre of operations.
It noted that the prompt and decisive action by the troops demonstrated a high level of combat readiness, resilience, and operational effectiveness in safeguarding critical military assets and maintaining momentum against insurgent groups.
However, the military confirmed that the encounter resulted in the loss of some personnel. The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, describing their sacrifice as a testament to their courage and commitment to national security.
He also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, assuring that their heroism would remain a source of pride to the nation.
The military urged the public and media to refrain from spreading unverified information and to allow due process in notifying the next of kin before further details are disclosed.
It further disclosed that follow-up clearance and exploitation operations are ongoing to track fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping.
Reaffirming its commitment to restoring peace and stability, the Armed Forces called on citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to support ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
