The FCT Police Command has deployed personnel and emergency responders to the scene of a building collapse on Abidjan Street, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, with search and rescue operations ongoing.
Police Public Relations Officer FCT Police Command, Abuja SP Josephine Adeh said the incident occurred at about 7:45 p.m. on September 7, 2026, when the Command received a distress call reporting the collapse.
A police response team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, ACP Edward Akaniyene, and the Area Commander, Metro, ACP Georgelyn Ufomadu, immediately mobilised to the scene.
They were joined by personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Fire Service (FFS), Security Service Department, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and other emergency response agencies.
The agencies commenced coordinated search and rescue operations to determine whether anyone was trapped beneath the rubble.
Preliminary findings by the Command indicated that the affected building had previously been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control, Abuja.
The police said no victim had so far been confirmed, but responders were continuing to search the debris for possible survivors.
The Command said investigations were also underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse and determine its possible cause.
It urged residents to remain calm and security-conscious while advising members of the public to keep away from the affected area and cooperate with emergency responders to ensure unhindered rescue operations.
