The Nigeria Police Force has firmly refuted recent online rumors alleging that the Enugu State Government’s official account was hacked, resulting in the theft of N1.09 billion. According to the police, this claim is entirely baseless, and no such incident of hacking has taken place.
In a detailed statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that the incident, which sparked widespread speculation, was not a cyber-breach but rather a case of procurement fraud. The investigation, conducted by the NPF-National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC), led to the arrest of a suspect involved in the fraudulent activities. Fortunately, the embezzled funds have been successfully recovered.
ACP Adejobi emphasized that the Enugu State Government, alongside other ministries, departments, and agencies, has proactively partnered with the NCCC to implement comprehensive security measures aimed at protecting their financial systems. These measures are designed to fortify their accounts against potential threats and ensure the integrity of their financial operations.
The police also urged citizens to exercise caution when encountering unverified information online.
ACP Adejobi advised the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and to always confirm the authenticity of news from credible sources before disseminating it.
This assurance from the Nigeria Police Force comes at a time when concerns about cyber-security and financial fraud are on the rise, highlighting the importance of robust security frameworks and public awareness in preventing the spread of false narratives.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi concluded the statement by reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining transparency and protecting public assets from fraudulent activities.
