Retired NDLEA directors congratulate Marwa, vow continued support for drug war

A delegation of retired Deputy Commanders General of Narcotics (DCGNs) who formerly served as directors in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has paid a courtesy visit to the agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), pledging sustained support for Nigeria’s anti-drug campaign.

According to Director, Media and Advocacy NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja Femi Babafemi, the visit, which took place on Thursday, 11 December 2025, was led by the former Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, DCGN Sunday Nbona Joseph (rtd). The delegation congratulated Marwa on the renewal of his tenure by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and commended his leadership for transforming the NDLEA into a globally respected drug law enforcement institution.

Joseph praised Marwa’s “relentless efforts, commitment and hard work,” noting that his reappointment signalled continued progress for the agency and the nation. He also thanked President Tinubu for renewing the NDLEA chairman’s mandate for another five years, assuring that the retired senior officers remain willing to offer guidance and support to advance the agency’s operational successes.

“We ask God to give you longevity and greater capacity to achieve more. Thank you very much for the opportunity you have given to us at such short notice,” Joseph said, before presenting Marwa with a giant congratulatory card on behalf of the group.

Responding, Marwa expressed appreciation for the visit and the goodwill expressed by the retired directors. He acknowledged their role in the agency’s achievements, emphasising that NDLEA’s progress is the product of collective effort across its directorates.

“A CEO cannot on his own make those seizures, those arrests, those sensitizations and all the rehabilitation going on. It is all under commands which fall under your various directorates,” he said. “I rely on the management team, which you have been, from the day I joined until when you left.”

Marwa also noted that while not everyone welcomed his return, particularly criminal networks affected by the agency’s operations, significant progress had been made since the officers’ retirement—and more is expected.

He assured them that President Tinubu’s unwavering support for NDLEA would further strengthen the ongoing fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

The visit concluded with the retired officers reaffirming their readiness to continue contributing to the agency’s mission.
