The Rwanda High Commission in Nigeria marked the 30th anniversary of its liberation, Kwibohora 30, with a celebration over the weekend. This milestone symbolizes the end of the genocide and the fall of the oppressive regime on July 4, 1994.
This year’s theme, “Rwanda’s Journey Continues,” underscores the nation’s ongoing efforts toward reconciliation, justice, economic growth, and social development.
Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo, highlighted the remarkable progress Rwanda has made while acknowledging that the journey toward a prosperous and unified nation continues. Reflecting on the challenges post-independence on July 1, 1962, Bazivamo emphasized the profound significance of July 4 for Rwandans.
“Kwibohora marks the day we reclaimed our nation, our dignity, and our right to chart our own path,” Bazivamo said. He honored the resilience of the Rwandan people and the bravery of the Rwandan Patriotic Army, expressing gratitude to those who fought for Rwanda’s freedom.
Bazivamo discussed Rwanda’s innovative approaches to justice and unity, including the Gacaca courts and the “Ndi Umunyarwanda” program, which have been pivotal in healing and fostering national unity. He noted Rwanda’s progress in reducing poverty, expanding healthcare and education access, and empowering women. With a 7% annual economic growth rate, Rwanda has become a key investment destination in Africa.
The envoy invited individuals to visit Rwanda, highlighting the country’s natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and vibrant culture. He also emphasized Rwanda’s supportive business environment and government commitment to growth.
Nigeria’s foreign affairs minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, commended Rwanda’s growth and achievements, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing cooperation and bilateral ties. Represented by a director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Safiu Olaniyan, Tuggar emphasized the importance of strengthening mutual relationships.
The event concluded with a raffle draw, where two attendees won complimentary round-trip tickets to Rwanda, and many others went home with prizes.
