Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to UNGA80

Vice President Kashim Shettima will head Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday.

According to a statement signed by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, Shettima will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, alongside other ministers and senior government officials.

Nigeria’s participation, the statement noted, will focus on key priorities including economic growth, international peace and security, human rights, humanitarian assistance, justice, disarmament, and global cooperation against terrorism and transnational crime.

The Vice President is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement on September 24, highlighting the country’s role in advancing regional and global peace, security, and climate action.

In addition to the General Debate, Nigeria will participate in several high-level side events, including the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question, the High-Level Roundtable on Energy and Security in the Gulf of Guinea, and the Forward Africa Leaders Symposium on digital transformation and AfCFTA’s digital trade framework.

The General Debate opens on September 23 in New York under the theme: “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”
