Shettima urges stakeholder collaboration for achieving SDGs and tackling climate change

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on African leaders, stakeholders, and the private sector to unite in creating an inclusive strategy to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address the pressing issue of climate change across the continent.

Speaking at the 2nd Africa Climate Forum (ACF) in Abuja, Shettima, represented by Rukayat El-Rufai, Special Advisor on Climate Change, emphasized the need for urgent collaboration in addressing Africa’s vulnerability to climate change. He highlighted Nigeria’s proactive measures, including the Climate Change Act of 2021, which aims for low emissions and sustainable development, alongside the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.

The Vice President stressed the immediate threat posed by climate change, urging stakeholders to move beyond discussion to action. He lauded the forum’s “Deal Room” initiative, which seeks to facilitate financing for climate projects, and emphasized the need for robust sustainable carbon markets.

Professor George Nwangwu, Director General of the Global Centre for Law, Business and Economy and convener of the forum, underscored the importance of Africa securing climate financing, stating that only 0.2% of the $400 billion required for the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage has been committed. He highlighted the urgency of addressing the financing gap and fostering African leadership in climate innovation and solutions.

Nwangwu concluded by calling for partnerships and concrete steps to propel Africa toward a future where the continent is a global leader in climate action, rather than dependent on external aid.
