The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a violent attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shi’ite group, on police officers stationed at Wuse Junction, Abuja.
In a statement Police Public Relations Officer for FCT command SP Josephine Adeh said the incident, which occurred near the traffic light at the junction, resulted in the tragic deaths of two police officers, while three others are currently unconscious and receiving treatment in the hospital.
She added that the attackers, armed with machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices, launched an unprovoked assault on the officers at the checkpoint, also setting ablaze three police patrol vehicles. In response, the FCT Police Command has made several arrests and assured the public that the situation is under control, with normalcy restored in the area.
Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, Psc. mni., has strongly condemned the attack, vowing that all those responsible wills be held accountable. Further updates on the situation will be provided as investigations continue.
