Soldier killed, others injured as vehicle rams into troops during army route march in Lagos

The Headquarters of the 81 Division, Nigerian Army (NA), has confirmed a tragic incident that occurred on Friday, January 31, 2025, during its Bi-Annual Route March near Myhoung Barracks in Yaba, Lagos State.

According to Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations 81 Division, Nigerian Army Lieut. Col. Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the exercise, aimed at enhancing operational readiness, involved NA formations across Lagos and had been widely publicized to inform the public. However, during the march, a private vehicle recklessly drove into the participating troops, resulting in the death of a soldier and injuries to several others.

He said the deceased soldier’s body has been deposited in the mortuary, while the injured personnel are receiving treatment at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba. The 81 Division Military Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, has launched a thorough investigation into the incident.

Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, General Officer Commanding 81 Division, extended his condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a swift recovery. He also urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue, emphasizing the Division’s unwavering commitment to training, security, and national duty.
