In a significant boost to Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to register and profile its citizens, South Korea has generously contributed 222 National Identification Number (NIN) Android Enrollment devices to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The donation was officially presented in Abuja to the Commission by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on behalf of the Korean government.
The aid, conveyed through a statement on Wednesday by Mr. Kayode Adebisi, the eGovt Programme Manager at KOICA Nigeria Office, is part of a broader project funded by the Korean government. The overarching objective of this project is to advance Digital Governance in Nigeria. Adebisi underscored that the initiative is currently underway in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

During the event, Mr. Sungil Son, the Country Director of KOICA Nigeria Office, emphasized the pivotal role of the National Identification Number (NIN) in facilitating government digital services. Son expressed the South Korean government’s satisfaction in contributing to fortifying the foundational base for government digital service delivery through NIMC. He expressed confidence that the donated devices would significantly augment NIMC’s capacity to extend NIN enrollment to underserved populations nationwide, thereby enhancing access to NIN registration for Nigerian citizens.
In response to this support, the Director General of NIMC, Engr Abisoye Coker-Odusote, conveyed sincere gratitude for KOICA’s assistance during the presentation of the new enrollment devices. Coker-Odusote highlighted the substantial impact these devices would have at the NIMC state office and expressed appreciation for KOICA’s timely support.
The focal point of the event was the official signing and exchange of handover certificates, accompanied by the symbolic presentation of the devices to the NIMC Director General. This collaboration between South Korea and Nigeria signifies a noteworthy step towards enhancing the efficiency and inclusivity of Nigeria’s national identification registration system.
