The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the successful restoration of full bulk power to its 132/33kV Apo Transmission Substation, effective Thursday, January 23, 2025. This development marks the completion of a critical project to relocate key power infrastructure impacted by the Federal Capital Development Agency’s (FCDA) road dualization along the Southern Expressway in the Apo axis of Abuja.
The relocation involved the dismantling and reconstruction of eight 132kV and 33kV transmission towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line. In addition, power cables were restrung to ensure the continued integrity of the network. The two-week project, which commenced on January 6, 2025, was carried out to accommodate the FCDA’s road expansion initiative, which required the removal of existing infrastructure along the planned route.
With the restoration of power, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (Abuja DisCo) is now able to resume normal electricity supply to customers who rely on the Apo Transmission Substation. This brings an end to the temporary load-shedding and power rationing that had been implemented during the relocation period.
Speaking on the achievement, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, commended the technical team for their efficiency in completing the project within the planned timeframe. She also extended TCN’s appreciation to electricity consumers in the affected areas for their patience and understanding throughout the duration of the work.
“This project was critical to ensuring the uninterrupted development of infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory while maintaining the reliability of the electricity supply network,” Mbah stated. “We remain committed to collaborating with stakeholders to deliver sustainable solutions that support Nigeria’s development goals.”
The Apo Transmission Substation plays a vital role in the electricity distribution network in Abuja, serving key residential, commercial, and institutional customers. The successful relocation and restoration of power reaffirm TCN’s commitment to maintaining operational excellence and ensuring minimal disruption to electricity consumers, even in the face of infrastructural adjustments.
TCN emphasized its dedication to upgrading and expanding the national grid to support Nigeria’s growing energy demands while working alongside government agencies to facilitate infrastructure projects that benefit the country’s socio-economic development.
